Qualifications & Professional / Academic History

  • LL.B. (Hons), University of Singapore (1990)
  • Admitted as Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore (1991)

Experience

Hur Yuin has over 20 years of experience. She has a highly varied practice covering diverse areas of civil litigation particularly family law, contract claims, estate and trust work (including probate and trust litigation), and intellectual property rights. She is interested in matters relating to wills and probate, as well as trusts and trustees' duties especially where they relate to the managing of the estates of deceased or mentally incapable persons. She views those cases, as well as her cases involving matrimonial and child custody/access proceedings, as all being part of her practice of "Family Law", in view of the fact that much of the trust and probate litigation she encounters arise from family disputes. It is her strong belief that in family matters especially, the adversarial system must be tempered, in appropriate circumstances, by compassion and common sense.

Professional Highlights

  • Hur Yuin was involved in Singapore's last appeal to the Privy Council (Lee Hiok Woon and others v Lee Hiok Ping and others [1996] 1 SLR(R) 643; [1996] SGPC 1) which dealt with breaches of trust taking place over a period of 30 years, as well as the High Court and Court of Appeal stages of the same matter. She also dealt with the subsequent applications for accounts and inquiries, tracing trust assets and examining transactions over the said 30-year period.
  • Her cases which received the attention of the media include:
    • Chee Mu Lin Muriel v Chee Ka Lin Caroline (Chee Ping Chian Alexander and another, interveners) [2010] 4 SLR 373 which involved a dispute between 2 sisters over 20 properties left by their late mother. Hur Yuin successfully helped the younger sister prove that the 2nd will was void as it was executed under suspicious circumstances when their mother was suffering from dementia.
